Obituary of Michael Mathany

MATHANY, (Mike) Michael William – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Mike Mathany of Chatham on Sunday, November 8th, 2015 at the age of 65 years.
Born in Chatham on March 10th, 1950. Graduate of Wallaceburg District Secondary School. Mike attended Queen’s University where he graduated with honours in Mathematics in 1971, followed by his Teaching degree in 1972. Mike moved to Chatham and became a Mathematics teacher at The Pines (Ursuline College), later becoming department head before retiring in 2009. Mike was actively involved in coaching high school girls’ soccer and in organizing and refereeing Chatham Youth Soccer where he recently received his 25 year service plaque. Mike’s dedication included serving on the Board of Directors for Chatham Youth Soccer and lining all City soccer fields with great pride.
Mike was deeply admired and respected by fellow teaching professionals, students and everyone he met through his connections in soccer and elsewhere. Mike will be missed by the anniversary crew and at summit lunches to come. Cherished son of Theresa Clare Mathany (McGrail) and the late Douglas Michael Mathany.
Beloved husband, confidant and best friend of Catherine (Cathy) Mathany whom he adored deeply for 41 years. Loving father of Ashley & Jeff Rivard, Ian Mathany, and Clarke & Amelia Mathany. Grandfather to Julia, Sam, Melissa, Heather, & Matthew Rivard, Anna & Maeve Mathany.
Mike was not only a best friend to many, but the oldest brother and the rock of a large and tightknit family. Brother to Terry-Lynn Dechman (Bill), Jean Kilby (Paul), Patti Chorpitta (Terry), Tim Mathany (Shelley), Ed Mathany (Marilyn), Judy Mathany, Ric Mathany (Rosalie), Sue Mathany (Carol), Barb Carson (Steve), Jeff Mathany, Kelly Rovers (Jeff) and Doug Mathany (Kim). Predeceased by his sister Ellen Bajc (Al). Brother-in-Law to Bonnie Duquette (Maurice). Michael will be greatly missed and remembered as a favourite uncle by his many nieces and nephews – John & Jill, Patricia & Brian, Erin & Rod, Greg & Christina, Brian, Karen & Jeff, Stephanie & Michael, Ryan, Shevon & Kim, Beth & Doug, Cory & Lena, Drew, Steve, Colin, Evan, Karen & Josh, Taylor, Mackenzie, Kirsten, Liam, Sydnee, Bailee, Holden, Ann Marie & Joe, Randy & Lorie.
Friends and relatives may visit at the Funeral Home, 156 William St. S. Chatham (519-352-5120) on Wednesday November 11, 2015 from 7-9 pm and again on Thursday November 12th from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm, where Vigil Prayers will be offered at 7 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday November 13, 2015 at 10 am in St. Joseph’s Church.
Interment will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations to Chatham Youth Soccer Association would be appreciated.
