Sympathy to all of John's Family. I enjoyed John and the Whippoorwills every Sat night at the Florence Community Centre. They were fun years for sure.. Treasure all your fun memories to help you through this sad time.

I feel such immense grief and sadness losing my dad.
The blue chair is empty.
The back seat has no one telling me that it's clear to pull out or that there is a red light ahead.
There is no cheering partner across from me on the crokinole board and the euchre game is missing its best player.
I have no one to ask about the strange sound coming from my fridge, or what it means when the red light flashes on my dashboard, or which screwdriver I need to hang my window blinds.
I walk with no one behind me who is making friendly, cheerful comments to passing strangers.
And, the book where he was writing his autobiography is not quite full.
Still, I know that I'm lucky to have had 65 years with my dad. There are so many happy memories, valuable lessons, and wise bits of advice that I will hold onto forever.
And there are the little things.
"Cheese and rice" are more than just foods now.
I'll be sure to watch for every lamp post in my rear view mirror.
I won't dare leave home without my wallet and my watch.
I'll try to always have a joke or a quick-witted comment ready to make someone smile.
I'll play those same 649 numbers every week because I'm sure one day they'll win.
I'll add just a little extra sugar on my cereal.
I'll blast my dad's country music louder and prouder than ever.
You were such a good father, Dad. You really and truly "couldn't be gooder". I love you and I miss you so, so much.

I likely met “Becky’s dad” shortly after meeting Becky on the first day of Grade 9 (49 years ago). During high school and University, there were many sleepovers, meals, and pick up and drop-offs at their house. Over the years, “Becky’s dad” became “John,” and I don’t recall a time ever seeing him when he wasn’t with “Becky’s mom.” His stance, voice, and laughter always seemed larger than life! John might be the OG of “dad jokes,” as he always seemed to have a few to tell. I thought he was cool because he’d been in a band. A few years back, John told my son he had played with Johnny Cash, and the first thing my son said after hearing of John’s death was, “Well, now he’s now in heaven playing music with Johnny again.” I think that’s a nice image to hold. I can’t imagine the hole his passing has left in Doris’ heart and world, and I only hope that in time, the space he filled in life will again fill her with happy memories. To my best friend, Becky, and her siblings, Tammy, Neva and Marty, I’m so sorry for your loss. But I’m glad to have known your dad—one of the good ones.

Our hearts go out to you in the passing of John. We always enjoyed our time visiting with him and loved to share a laugh. It was a bonus when I was able to hear him sing and play guitar he was a talented man. We remember him fondly and know he will be truly missed on this earth. Rest peacefully John.

John was like the Father I never had and grew to love very much. At first I just didn’t know what to make of him. He had guns, he hunted and fished, he liked farms, he sang country music, he was physically strong beyond his image. His hands got dirty, he fixed things, and then fixed them again. He saw value in everyday things - not expensive things. He didn’t have a post secondary education, I don’t think he even finished high school. I am preppy, I don’t fix much, with my hands anyway, I’m afraid of guns, I don’t hunt or really fish for that matter. I didn’t like country music. Yet as we got to know each other, it was amazing how much we shared in common to the point where it was fun to be together. He was whip smart, great to talk to and a good person to just hang around with.
More importantly was what I have learned from John over the years. What it means to work hard all the time to make ends meet. To bring enthusiasm to every day. To solve problems with ingenuity, not money. To step up when needed, to always bring a sense of humour to the room and to always be kind.
I learned about the value of having a strong constitution from John. Likely one of the best gifts I ever received from anyone.
Oddly, one time we were sitting in our hot tub solving the world's problems when he said he liked me, and I said I like him. Like two kids who needed to say something but didn’t know what to say. I thought about punching him in the arm the way “guys” do but I thought better of it.
Becky is the love of my life, and I can honestly say a part of why that is, stems from her being a bit like her Dad.
You are all very fortunate to have had John as your Husband, Dad or Friend. Thank you for sharing a bit of him with me. I am forever grateful.

John was just one terrific neighbour... always a smile and sometimes a joke or two when you stopped to visit with them outside. He will surely be missed in the park.

No one teaches you how to watch your parent die. No one teaches you how to say a final goodbye - as you’re holding the hand of your passing parent how to whisper words that seem so little compared to the overwhelming breaking of your heart. No one tells you about this moment of losing a parent - a moment so big, so so big, it changes everything, no matter how old you are. I love you and will miss you dad, more than you’ll ever know. And don’t worry - I’ll make sure to watch the post.

My grandpa was one of my favourite people. I have so many good memories with him. One of my favourites was him telling me the story of how him & grandma met & I could still see the love he has for her shining through his words after so many years; I hope one day I can have a love as beautiful & timeless as theirs. I loved listening to his stories. He taught me the value of a hard days’ work & how to be resourceful. I still listen to his records on repeat to fall asleep & always will. He made this world a better place & always made everyone laugh. I will miss him so deeply & I’ll miss his laugh the most.

I will always be grateful for how John and Doris welcomed me into their home so many years ago. I am very glad I got to share Thanksgiving with you all in 2018. John remains incredibly vital in my memories. Love and Sympathy to the family.
